Quentin Tarantino’s Top 20
If it wasn’t for this Friday’s “John Hughes Tribute” Double Feature screening of “Breakfast Club” and “Weird Science“, I would certainly be attending the debut of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds“. I tend to dislike opening nights anyway, but I’ll be check it before the start of next week. I’m not sure what to expect from this film, but it’s always more fun that way anyway.

Tarantino recently released a Top 20 Films list since 1992, which is the year his epic “Reservoir Dogs” came out. Since all of this got me in a movie-mood, I thought I’d make my own comments on his list below. The list was compiled in alphabetical order as opposed to numerical rank, with the exception of his #1 favorite which is listed first. If you’d like to watch Tarantino run down the list himself you could do so by clicking here.
- “Battle Royale“ – The Kinji Fukasaku film was 6th in my netflix queue after a few months of steady climbing. I just pressed the button that shot it to the top!
- “Anything Else“ – I love most Woody Allen films, but this one didn’t make much of a dent in my memory, aside from me not really liking Jason Biggs. This is probably worth watching again – I love being in a totally different place in my life and ingesting a film already seen in a totally new way.
- “Audition” – HA! You EB movie-night regulars already how I feel about this one.
- “The Blade“ – or imdb pulls up the title as “Dao“, but yeah…not the Wesley Snipes widow’s peak/flat top vampire-slaying specialty.
- “Boogie Nights“ – While I prefer PTA’s “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Magnolia” way more, this one somehow reached out to more people and made Dirk Diggler a commonly referenced icon.
- “Dazed and Confused“ – This was in the running for our “Back-to-School” movie night selection, but we thought it’d be better served at the start of the summer. Tarantino’s description of this in the video is right on.
- “Dogville“ – An absolute favorite of mine! Like most Lars von Trier films, this one bothered me for a while (in a good way). I remember seeing this at the Huntington Cinema Arts Centre when it first came out, and a hole burned through a few frames of the final scene. Didn’t spoil the movie though, it somehow made the experience even better. I’m waiting for a reason to show this here one night, but until then – be proactive.
- “Fight Club“ – Easy choice. This movie actually got me to read things other than magazines, and become a member of the cult of Chuck Palahniuk. His influential resume of work is probably generously sprinkled throughout my general thought and perspectives day to day.
- “Friday“ – classic characters, lines that have become societal norms. I think the movie is a bit overrated, but it’s enjoyable I guess.
- “The Host“ – added to my instant queue!
- “The Insider“ – not much of a Michael Mann fan, definitely not one of Russell Crowe either.
- “Joint Security Area“ – the only reason this isn’t at the top (other than “Battle Royale” occupying the spot) is because in the past month I’ve watched 3 other Chan-wook Park films. “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” was my favorite, but “JSA” came before, so I must go back and watch!
- “Lost in Translation“ – I can’t get enough of Sofia Coppola’s work – yes, even “Marie Antoinette“. But, this was her best. One night we stayed here late watching this and it was funny to see Evan and Alex so enamored by the Japanese culture “Bob” and “Charlotte” were so disconnected from in the film. A top 5 for me.
- “The Matrix“ – Tarantino’s description is dead accurate. I actually studied this film through the duration of this Social Theory class I took my senior year in college. I lived and breathed it and even though I like it, I could probably do with never ever seeing it again. A+ in the class by the way!
- “Memories of Murder“ – Wait! This is the new #2 on my queue. I’m just now remembering a friend recommending this to me a few months ago. Seems “Memento“-ish!
- “Supercop“ - Not added. Someone will have to force me. I don’t have much interest in Jackie Chan, unless it involves Chris Tucker…but then substitute them for my real life version of “Lee” & “Carter”…my boys Doc and Mo!
- “Shaun of the Dead“ – not as bad as I expected, but I could do without this type of humor…for the rest of my life. It was 100x funnier to hear how my dad one night went into Blockbuster looking to rent it and said “Do you have John of the Dead?“.
- “Speed“ – Surprised this made it, but I do remember it being so fun to watch this in theatres at a time where movies like this weren’t as common and corny. Nowadays I just hold onto the fact that my sister and I can never say the word “cans”, without saying it all Canadian sounding, like when Keanu said it after the bus hit the baby stroller…”Kaaahnns! It was kaaahnns!“.
- “Team America: World Police“ – I wrote a review for this in Newsday when it came out as part of the Part 2 “Impulse” crew. As the resident hater on board I’m pretty sure I ripped it, but I have to admit I find most of the songs enjoyable now when I hear them.
- “Unbreakable“ – M. Night Shyamalan’s magnum opus! Another absolute favorite of mine I plead people to watch. I don’t totally hate his other work aside from “Signs“, but do not let it taint or spoil any inclination you might have to watch this movie. As far as I’m concerned, this is the kind of greatness achieved before big film companies and the mainstream pressures completely destroy brilliance and instill conformity. IMDB shows “Unbreakable 2” for 2012…please find your roots M. Night!!
That’s all folks…see you Friday for movie night!!

No commentsAir Jordan VII (7) DMP
The DMP VII (7) is the second release of the commemorative Air Jordan 60+ campaign. Michael Jordan wore the AJVII during his March 4th, 1993 game against the Orlando Magic, scoring a remarkable 64 points.
Unlike the original black colorway, the retro features a predominately charcoal upper dipped in an ultra soft, and ultra smooth suede.
With very similar color characteristics to the ‘French Blue’ AJVII, the white version in this pack takes similar design cues from the circa 1990′s Orlando Magic jersey, like the black/grey striped pattern which is featured on the tounge/sock-liner. The rest of the upper is a combination of smooth and pebbled white leather.
And of course the swiss cheese sole
Also available in (GS) sizes 3.5-7.
Thats all folks…

Back to School Movie Fridays
I told you it’d be back…don’t know why you were in disbelief. It was only a matter of time…is the scientific explanation as to what our special ingredients consist of really necessary? Maybe to some, but all in due time – for now, movie night is back…back to SCHOOL!
Obviously “school” is the central theme involved with this film series, but to make things more exciting we decided to take a rewind through the decades starting with Kid-n-Play’s 1992 favorite, “Class Act”. For the 1980′s we decided to pay respect to the sad passing of 80′s movie king John Hughes, by showing 2 of his classics – “Breakfast Club” and “Weird Science”. Wrapping things up with the 70′s, is the comical and poignant “Cooley High”.
AND, to further flavor things – we will feature our favorite joints and jams from each era curated and DJ’d live in-store, before and after each showing.

*If you’re a first-time curious about the above like it’s “Fight Club” or something – contact us with your questions at: extrabutterny@gmail.com / #516.632.5150*
**If you’re a EB movie night vet that snatches the elephant print bean bag chairs early, or brings your own Mishka pillow, you get special discount offers if you show up dressed in an outfit that matches the era involved with the movie being shown! Don’t be that guy/gal that shows up not matching the theme!!**

No commentsNike Back To School 2009
It’s August 9th right now. School is right around the corner, but don’t worry, Nike will hold you down.
First up is the Scantron Blazer. Nike went all out with the question bubbles running all along the sides, personal information fill-in on the back heel, and complete with the one tool you need to use with the Scantron… a number 2 pencil (how many times have you forgotten that one sharpened pencil?!). Anyway, it’s out with the old multiple choice graded by hand, and in with electronic grading. “The scantron graded wrong!!”
**You big baby adults crying about “I want these in my size!!”, don’t you worry – Scantron Blazer quickstrikes in men’s sizes should be in soon!!**
Next is this pair of Crayola Dunk High’s. I have no idea how I didn’t recognize these immediatly when they first came in (sadly enough I haven’t had a crayon session in a while), but that’s what I really like about this pair, it’s such a good colorway even without the Crayola reference. This Dunk High sports a deep “del sol” yellow and “team green” color, featuring the Crayola box’s signature two strokes printed along the stitching. I’m about to put those crayons to use in a serious coloring session after work today…
Lastly we have the Marble Notebook Vandal High. We had to bring these back out. Many people were asking if we had any of these left and we had a few pairs, so come through before they’re gone for good!

Look for the August Friday Night movie schedule to be up soon, back to school style!

1 commentAugust Nike drops
SUMMER IS OVER!! Hahaha, no no not yet…these last few weeks are bound to be good ones, especially with the latest drops from Nike!!
Okay retro fiends, I’ll start with you first. The Air Trainer III or better known as the “Medicine Balls” are here. You lightweights know what a medicine ball is? One of the most highly sought after Bo Jacksons, come and get em!
“Tennis Pack” Air Force 1 Premiums in as well, with that shiny patent leather toe and the Agassi-esque paint splat in the back.

Nike Dunk High Nylon in metallic platinum, hot red, hyper blue colorway for more of that crispy clean ish…
More from the Dunk family for women and kids. None of these are a miss, my favorites being the High Premium with the tie-dye-like canvas, and the kids dunk high in navy with the orange contrast stitching and a tonal design of dope little Nike graphics throughout the upper.

On the 6.0 side, this Women’s Blazer is…. WOW.

An Air Max 90 for women arrived as well for those of you trying to get your gym on.

And last, but absolutely not least…the Wmns Vandal High. Nevermind the Vandal being one of my favorite shoe, and the fact that this comes with an extra ankle strap, but the cotton jersey material that makes up these kicks keep this as one of the best Vandals I’ve ever seen. Grrr on women’s sizing, but I think my size is out there somewhere, unlike the women’s tearaways that I know I’ll never find.

More for Back-to-School, including special Nike releases, a Movie Night film series returns, and some other extra buttery goodness….stay tuned!

Featuring a black and metallic silver colorway, it will appropriately mark Def Jam’s 25th year. Def Jam’s record label theme is supported by the turntable lace locks and insole.
