Friends of Extra Butter: To celebrate Black History Month, EB caught up with local Black creatives that are friends of the brand to discuss their personal experiences in the industries they work in and motivation for other Black creatives out there.

We wanted to highlight what it takes being a Black creative today, but also show what is possible for all young professionals that have a dream.

Meet James Denis “Twin” - Agent for young Black creatives

What sparked your interest in becoming a Talent Agent?
In the beginning I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do. I was just doing me, enjoying culture and bumped into Sam Ben-Avraham who gave me my first taste of industry. He invited me out to Liberty Fairs and told me I needed to immerse myself in the culture and the right opportunity would find me. As I began to do that I linked up with the guys from the Maison Studio who are really at the center of what I do and began doing whatever I could to 3lelevate the circumstance.

As a talent agent for Black Creatives, what do you look for when you’re scouting?
I look for talent that resonates with me through their work, passion and story.

"... it is important for me to platform Black creatives when I can and continue to push the agenda of diversity behind scenes so we can get more of the hard to get opportunities."

As an agent, how do you fight for the opportunities that your Black creatives may be looked over, passed on or not even considered for?
Though the world has been made more aware, there is still a disparity when it comes to equity and opportunity in the culture. So it is important for me to platform Black creatives when I can and continue to push the agenda of diversity behind scenes so we can get more of the hard to get opportunities.

What advice would you give to young future artists?
Take yourself seriously NOW! Block out the distractions and do what you love. Building a team of people who share your passion, vision, and things will start to fall into place.

What do you hope for in the next generation of young Black professionals? I just really hope for the next generation that there is more transcendent success and bigger bag$!!!
