Revered for his prowess as a hitter, he was an All-Star seven consecutive times, won a Triple Crown, and anchored six World Series champion teams. He also had a career batting average of .340 and snagged over 493 home runs and 1,995 RBIs. He played 2,130 consecutive games--a streak he chose to end after being diagnosed with ALS. When he announced his farewell from baseball, he described himself as the "luckiest man on the face of the earth."
